From Here to Eternity

Every year around this time I continue my quest to watch every movie that has won an Academy award.  Even though I had previously seen "From Here to Eternity" I decided to go back and re-watch it, due to the fact that I couldn't remember a lot of it. So does it hold up a second time?  Sure it's an ok movie.  The story is entertaining enough.  I think the problem is that so much time has passed since this movie came out. The only thing people remember from the film is the beach make out scene they show during all the old movie highlight reels. The epic music is soaring as the waves roll over Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr.  There in lies the problem the film reel happens to be more epic than the actual film.  Many people who haven't seen the movie may think it is a sprawling epic war movie, but in reality it is a story of a stubborn guy who just doesn't want to box in the armed forces anymore, while falling in love with a "classy escort".  At the same time his commanding officer falls in love with his captains wife. At the end you finally get to see a small part of the attack on Pearl Harbor, but for the most part it is a character drama with people who happen to be in the armed services.

The acting is good.  It always takes a little time getting used to watching acting from another time, but the characters are believable and likeable.  Frank Sinatra steals every scene he is in except for maybe the scenes where he encounters Ernest Borgnine, who would be consider the villain of the film.


So basically it is a good film, but if you are like me, lower your expectations a little before watching. The film just doesn't live up to the epic film reels.  Damn you Film montage people for raising my hopes too much once again.

In the Beginning

So today Steph, my beautiful wife, gave me my Valentine's Day present.  She noticed that recently I have been posting a lot of comments on my Facebook page about movies we see.  So, the wonderful person she is, decided to take my love of movies to the next step and create a movie blog for me.  So going forward I will try my best to post a little something about all the movies we watch.  Whether good or bad no movie will be missed.  I may not be the best wordsmith in the world, but I promise to give my best critique of all films I can.

Midnight in Paris

This past weekends Oscar viewing was "Midnight in Paris". This was my second time watching(Steph's first) and I loved it even more. Out of all the Best Picture nominations I want this one to win the most. I am a huge Woody Allen fan, but putting that aside, this movie was just great. I liked how the movie didn't try to amaze everyone technically or blow people away with the dramatic performance. It makes you smile the whole time and it just had a good story.

The Artist

So in the continuation to the Oscars, Steph and I watched "The Artist" this weekend. It was pretty good. Took some getting used to since we don't watch silent films all the time, but it was fun to watch. Dream sequence was really cool. I'm sure it won't be for everybody, but I would recommend for people who enjoy classic Hollywood.

The Descendants

So we watched "The Descendants" last night. Good movie. I can definitely see why everyone is raving about Clooney. It was sad with a few funny parts and over all very touching. I still say "Sideways" is Alexander Payne's best movie, but this comes in second.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

Finally got to see my Birthday movie. We saw "Girl with The Dragon Tattoo." It was good, long and a tad confusing at times, but very good. Yet another reason why I think Daniel Craig and David Fincher are pretty awesome. Big Thank you to Steph for treating me. I have a pretty awesome wife too.
